Debian chooses its release schedule
Written by jmc
mercoledì, 29 luglio 2009

The Debian project developers have announced today their decision to adopt a two-year release cycle, which sees its freeze period starting on the December of every odd year, and the stable release date on the December of the subsequent even year.

Squeeze will make an exception, by the moment that the last stable release went out this February, and so it will pass less than a year from the current stable to the next freeze. All the subsequent releases will stick to the chosen deadlines.

Debian Lenny 5.0 released
Written by jmc
domenica, 15 febbraio 2009

L'immagine di "Lenny" presa dal film Toy Story di Diseny/Pixar.After 22 months of hard development, it's been released yesterday Debian 5.0, codenamed "Lenny".

Lenny supports a total amount of 12 architectures and introduces something new in several parts of the system: from the introduction of new games in the repositories to the availability of OpenJDK (which, as a consequence, makes Java-based applications available in the main branch), passing through the support for localizations in the package descriptions.

As always, Debian also gives attention to the overall system security: after installing Lenny, critical security updates will be automatically downloaded, if possible, and the number of binaries which require to have the setuid root bit set has been reduced.

For more informations I recommend you to read the official announcement, and I wish you a good installation or update, while we wait for the next stable release, "Squeeze". Wink
